Challenge Yourself To Dream Of What You Really Want

If you’re anything like me there are times in your life when you wonder what the h*ll it is you’re doing?

The first time I wondered that to myself was when I was still in college. I was studying a subject I was not in the least passionate about. It was however a sensible choice and would give me ‘ample career choices’. Unfortunately I didn’t know what it was I wanted to do instead, so I stuck it out and graduated.

By then I was done studying. I still didn’t really know what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, so I figured I’d better start looking for a job.

I found one at a project management company where I started at the bottom. From there I had nothing but a view of the first rung of the career ladder. I put my head down and began plugging away.

Once I found myself a couple of rungs up the career ladder I finally looked around. That’s when I discovered more than 17 years had gone by.

During those years I had spells where I wondered why I was doing what I was doing. Why wasn’t I doing something that made me happy instead?

I always managed to push these thoughts away. Usually because a challenge came my way, for the moment shifting my focus to the new task at hand. Eventually though, I would always return to wondering what I’d rather be doing.

I was now almost 40 and still had some 25 years to go before retirement would even be an option. Did I really want to spend those years as I had been doing the previous 17+?

THAT’S WHEN I STOPPED WONDERING AND STARTED DREAMING

No, that’s actually not as wishy-washy as it sounds!! So bare with me here!

I started imagining what my life would look like if money was not an issue. Where would I be living? What view would I be waking up to every day? What work would I do? I dreamed in ever more detail and with every detail I came a bit closer to realising that dream.

When I fell in love with the mountains I turned an important corner. In that moment I knew I would someday be living there.

It took a couple of more years of dreaming and taking small steps, but eventually I did move to the Alps. And though that was a major step in realising my dream life, I’m not quite there yet.

I’m still working towards realising my dream. I’ve tweaked my original one a bit, but not by much. It’s on my vision board hanging on the wall opposite my desk. Someday it will be a reality!

MY CHALLENGE TO YOU: START DREAMING TOO

If you – like I used to – find yourself thinking about things you’d rather be doing. Thinking about how you can live your life with heart and mind in alignment ….

If you’re thinking about things that will enable you to fulfil your greatest potential …

I challenge you to start dreaming and make that dream as specific as you can.

Note the colours, smells, feelings and sounds! Explore the work you’d be doing! Think of all the people that will be part of your dream!

Answer every question you can think of and then think of 10 more you can ask.

Put that dream on paper, preferably in long hand because it will help it truly take hold in your subconscious mind.

Putting your dreams into words is the first step towards realising it. In the mean time I will keep working towards making my own dream come true:

Working in my own successful coaching practice. A gorgeous little white house on a sunny south slope will be my home base. And the view from the porch will be of beautiful snow-capped mountains

Share your thoughts below and let me know what you think. Be as specific as you can when you share your thoughts. Other people, Trailblazers like you, will be inspired by your ideas and actions.

Thank you for reading and adding your voice to the conversation.

As always…

Go dare greatly!
