It’s Small Steps That Will Get You There

You know how you sometimes start something and find yourself really regretting it only halfway in?

Recently I was talking with a friend about a particular mountain hike which involves a steep and long climb to get onto a ridge after which the trail levels off and becomes easy. It’s a gorgeous hike and we both love it but for one ‘tiny’ detail. From the ridge onwards the trail is gorgeous, but you first have to get there.

THIS IS HOW I REMEMBER IT

When I was halfway up the ridge I started cursing it, the mountain and myself for getting it into my head I absolutely wanted to reach a particular mountain cabin. It seemed the climb went on forever. It was steep. It was hard. It was slow. It was never ending.

JUST AS I WAS ABOUT TO CALL IT QUITS

I came up on the ridge and immediately forgot I had been cursing myself half of the way up there. The view that opened up to me was incredible and in itself totally worth the arduous climb I had just completed.

In that moment I would have been totally fine with never reaching the mountain cabin. My day had just been made!!

(The rest of the hike was easy going and also worth it, but it was reaching the ridge and the view that awaited me there, that gave me an incredible sense of accomplishment and joy)

WHY AM I TELLING YOU THIS?

You may – in this very moment – be working towards a goal. You’ve got your head down, slogging along, working hard and diligently towards your goal.

Maybe you feel you’re not making progress and your goal doesn’t seem to get any nearer. It may be hard, slow and seemingly never ending.

Until all of a sudden you will find you’re over that hump and the going is getting easier.

Keep taking small steps. It’s what got me up that mountain ridge and it’s what will get you to your goal!
