No, You Didn’t Waste The First Half Of Your Life

It’s a good two weeks since I’ve put up a new post. I went on a family visit and had all these good intentions around keeping up my work schedule. I could have known things would come up that would make that schedule fly out of the window.

Now I could have thought about my having scheduled the 10 days I was going to be visiting as a complete waste of my time, but I didn’t. Sure, at first I struggled a bit with the fact that things weren’t going the way I had planned.

For the first time in something like a year, I didn’t keep my promise to myself and you guys, to post a weekly newsletter. For the first time in months I skipped keeping up with social media and doing at least 2-3 posts a day.

Did the world stop?

Had I wasted my time trying to create a schedule that had both quality time with family and friends and work on it?

No!

By sitting down and scheduling I had declared my intentions to myself and the Universe. Looking back, I can see I just hadn’t thought the schedule through enough. I hadn’t taken into account that quality time with family and friends meant more time and actual attention from me.

I decided to go with the flow and enjoy my visit. And next time I won’t try to schedule so much work into a family visit.

Which brings me to the fear people often have when they would like to take their life or their career in an entirely different direction.

They feel they can’t step onto that new path, because they’ve wasted the first half of their life or career doing things that haven’t given them the necessary experience or skills.

This especially comes up when they want to take their professional life in an entirely different direction.

Before taking my own life in an entirely different direction, I had the exact same convictions.

How was all my experience in project and facility management going to benefit me in my work as a coach, a mountain hiking guide or anything else?

Little did I know that many of the experiences I had and the skill set I build would come in incredibly handy!
