Day #06

Honouring the Old, Part 1: The Jar of Life

In the first week of the Masterclass you identified values and expectations put upon you by others as well as your own values and expectations. Looking at that inventory you may find it hard to live up to them all. You may not even want to!

In this exercise I want you to imagine yourself as being a very large mason jar or bucket.

It is filled to the brim with a couple of big rocks, quite a lot of pebbles, while whatever space is left is filled with fine sand.

The big rocks represent big expectations and important values you are expected to live up to.

The pebbles represent smaller expectations and values as well as some obligations.

The sand represents everything else you have going on in your life.

Next to the jar or bucket lies perhaps a small pile of rocks representing values and expectations that are your own. They are not put upon you by anybody else. These are values and expectations that you want to live up to because they are yours.

When there is indeed a pile of rocks next to your jar or bucket, some of the big rocks that are already in there will have to make place for the ones you want to put in.

The question therefore is:

“Which of the rocks already in the jar will you be replacing with which new ones and why?”

Honouring the Old, Part 2: Honour & Release The ‘Old’

By the way, hang on to your chosen objects for a little bit longer. You’ll need them tomorrow!

Yesterday you decided which of your old values and expectations you will be replacing with new ones.

It is easy, perhaps tempting even, to simply discard them without a second thought.

However, in some capacity or form over the years they probably served you well.

That’s why I want you to take some time to honour the things, the values and expectations, you will be saying goodbye to.

If you were in the mountains with me I would ask you to pick a stone, a rock for each of the values and expectations you will leave behind. We’d go hiking together and you’d have the opportunity and time to discard each of those rocks representing a value or expectation. You could simply leave it by the trail side, throw it of a cliff, into a lake or honour it by leaving it in a beautiful spot.

Since you are not here with me, I’d like you to – after this class has finished – pick objects you can discard later, representing each of the things you will be leaving behind.

It can be anything. A stone, a marble, a tree leaf, a piece of paper with the value or expectation written on it, … Anything as long as it can be discarded later on.

Whatever you choose as an object, I then want you to spend some time thinking of each of the values and expectations you will be saying goodbye to and consciously think about what they have brought you.

REMEMBER: hang on to your chosen objects for a little bit longer. You’ll need them tomorrow!

Honouring the Old, Part 3: Forgiveness

The final exercise in this 3-step assignement of ’Honouring the Old’ is centred on forgiveness (Duffield-Thomas, 2013).

Now that you’ve spend time figuring out what values and expectations are really yours, you may experience some feelings of anger and resentment towards those who ‘forced’ you to live up to theirs.

You may be thinking things like:

“If they hadn’t pushed me to study that sensible subject I would now be doing what I love”

OR

“I really want them to admit they did me wrong by making me pursue what was really their dream”

OR

“I can’t forgive them. What they did to me was really bad and wrong”

For all I know you may be right. And some things really are unforgivable. But hanging on to anger and resentment is unhealthy too!

Just think of all that negative energy building up within you when you keep focussing on things that were done to you in the past and can’t be undone.

Also chances are you will never get apologies or acknowledgement. Don’t forget people, parents especially, in general only want the best for their loved ones, friends, colleagues, etc. and therefore do what they think is best.

This exercise is meant to help you let go of those feelings of anger and resentment. It is the only way to truly become free to step onto your own life’s path.

Some people find it challenging to imagine their ideal life. In particular when faced with 3 blank A4- or letter sized pages. To help you get started I’ve put together a list of powerful questions that you’ll find to be helpful.

You started this journey you are on because you wanted to figure out how to live your life true to yourself. How to live your own life.

Now take some time to write down in as great a detail as possible what that life, your ideal life, will look like.

In doing so answer questions like:

  • Where do you live?
  • Are you in a relationship?
  • Do you have kids?
  • What do you do for a living?
  • What do you do for fun?
  • What have your successes been?
  • Etc., etc.
